We take a look at the most outstanding players in the very enterprising English Premier League for the month of January in 2017.

This ranking was done and published by telegraph.co.uk as JJ Bull ranks them in order of the Babbello Index.

----------

20. Olivier Giroud (Arsenal)

Having found his way back in the Arsenal starting XI, Giroud has played five Premier League games, scored three goals and assisted two. Was instrumental in dragging Arsenal back into the 3-3 draw with Bournemouth.

19. Gylfi Sigurdsson (Swansea)

Paul Clement has moved Sigurdsson to a second striker role and is already reaping the benefits. An assist against Crystal Palace and a goal against Liverpool has helped Swansea climb out of the relegation zone.

18. Matt Phillips (West Brom)

A Scottish person in the Babbello Index? My word, the world truly has gone mad. Matt Phillips has been a revelation this season and really found form the last month, providing three assists and finding the back of the net himself. Even though West Brom love defending more than life itself, Phillips' dribbling skills have helped them get better at entertaining the paying crowds and he has made 22 dribbles - the fourth highest in the league this month.

17. Robert Snodgrass (West Ham / Hull)

Snoddy, as he likes to be called, has been so good in January that West Ham decided to buy him to replace Dimitri Payet. He scores free-kicks, his delivery from wide is superb and only two players in the league have created as many chances as the Scot (12) for the month of January.

16. Marcos Alonso (Chelsea)

Alonso has been a great signing for Antonio Conte this season and has had a great month - except for the defeat to Spurs. Alonso's performance against Leicester, in which he scored two goals, was brilliant.

15. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Man Utd)

Is there a more technically gifted player than Zlatan in the Premier League? Probably not, and once again the Swede has been imperious as he leads the Man Utd line and scored two, while assisting one.

14. Laurent Koscielny (Arsenal)

All the hype is around Spurs and Chelsea right now - rightly so - but Arsenal quietly snuck into second place before their surprise defeat by Watford. Their good run owed plenty to some heroic performances by Koscielny. Has made eight tackles and 10 interceptions this month.

13. Andy Carroll (West Ham)

When Andy Carroll is on his game, very few defenders in the Premier League can deal with him. This month he's been at it, scoring three goals in four games - including that absolutely incredible bicycle kick, which alone earns him a place in this list.

12. Victor Wanyama (Spurs)

Wanyama has been one of the signings of the season. He adds steel and dynamism to the Spurs midfield, as well as being very clever with his breaking up of play. The midfielder has made 22 tackles this month - the joint most in the league - and was a key part of Spurs' win over Chelsea.

11. Ander Herrera (Man Utd)

Now that Man Utd have worked out what an Ander Herrera is and how to use one, he has been one of their best players. The Spaniard's passing game looks increasingly integral to the way United play, and he's also made 13 interceptions - third most in the league. He does the work, Carrick keeps things taking over, Pogba brings the class.

10. Roberto Firmino (Liverpool)

Like my brief foray into skateboarding during my youth, it's all gone downhill very quickly for Liverpool and they don't seem to be able to work out how to avoid the imminent crash. Luckily for Jurgen Klopp, Firmino has continued to be good at his job while his teammates flounder and his two goals against Swansea were very good and should have been enough to rescue a point.

9. Paul Pogba (Man Utd)

That hashtag didn't really work out for him but let us not hide the very good football that Paul Pogba played in the games that weren't against Liverpool. He's scored one, created nine chances, had 13 shots on goal and attempted relatively successfully to dribble 20 times - which is a lot.

8. Danny Rose (Spurs)

Since moving to a back three, Rose has had more time to adventure forwards a left midfielder. As a result he's created nine chances this month and managed to help his team keep a clean sheet against Chelsea. That is not easy to do.

7. Kyle Walker (Spurs)

It's hard to pick one of the Spurs full-backs to be the better one but Walker gets the vote this time. He hasn't been quite as creative as Rose but is always in the right defensive positions to keep Spurs tight at the back. He also has the good sense to let those more technically gifted make attacking passes.

6. N'Golo Kante (Chelsea)

Kante hasn't been at his very best this month but nevertheless needs to be towards the top of this list because he is fantastic. Like Roy Keane strapped to batteries you buy from somewhere other than Poundland, he is an energetic ball of intercepting, tackling, box-to-box fun.

5. Dele Alli (Spurs)

Mauricio Pochettino has discovered that when you play Dele Alli just off a striker, he makes you win games of football. Alli has scored a goal a game this month but his contribution to Spurs' attacking play is more than just the goals he brings. Flashes of skill, running off the ball, the feisty, aggressive way he wins the ball back - he's becoming a magnificent player.

4. Diego Costa (Chelsea)

Even though his "back was injured", Diego Costa managed to score twice this month, returning to the Chelsea side and showing just why Conte is so very desperate to keep hold of the best striker in the league.

3. Christian Eriksen (Spurs)

Eriksen has steadily improved over the last few seasons to become perhaps the most effective creative midfielder in the league. He helped set up 15 chances for team-mates this month, and they took three of them. His deeper role in the Spurs midfield means he can control play far more than when closer to the striker and the team benefits as a result.

2. Harry Kane (Spurs)

There were some of us who thought Kane might be a one-season wonder, and while I won't name any names, it was me. I Was Wrong. Kane scored five goals in five games this month, setting the standard for a Spurs team now very much in the running for the title.

1. Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal)

It might sound like an exaggeration, but Alexis Sanchez is going to be remembered as one of the greatest players in Premier League history. He probably should anyway. This month he scored three, assisted two, created 14 chances, had 20 shots, dribbled with the ball 24 times. He decides matches on his own and the fury he vents at Arsenal teammates for celebrating a draw is exactly the kind of winning mentality they need to be shown.
